Definition
Productivity of pasture vegetation is the amount of forage from a pasture that can be fed to livestock without causing its subsequent degradation.
Calculation method
The productivity of natural pastures is calculated on the basis of the total mass of the herbage (yield) and its utilization coefficient. The main stages of the calculation include the clipping method for data collection and subsequent computations to determine the stock of feed units and the carrying capacity of the pasture. 1) The yield of green mass is determined during the period of maximum herbage development (usually before grazing). On the pasture, 4–5 sample plots are laid out, the grass is cut, the green mass is weighed and its yield is determined in centners per hectare (centners/ha). 2) Calculation of the forage mass stock (У). To convert fresh mass into air-dry mass (hay), correction coefficients that take moisture content into account are applied: Ус = Уз х Кс, where Ус — hay yield (centners/ha), Уз — green mass yield (centners/ha), Кс — conversion coefficient (depends on the herbage, usually 0.2–0.35). 3) Calculation of gross productivity in feed units. To obtain the nutritive value, the yield is converted into feed units (FU) or metabolizable energy: П = Ус х Пэ where П — productivity (centners FU/ha), Пэ — nutritive value of 1 centner of pasture forage in feed units (usually about 0.4–0.5 FU for natural mixed herbage). 4) Determination of economic (actual) productivity. Part of the herbage is trampled by animals or remains uneaten. Therefore, a pasture utilization coefficient Kисп is introduced, which is 0.5–0.7 for natural land: Пхоз = П х Kисп 5) Calculation of pasture carrying capacity. To find out how many head of livestock a plot can feed, the following formula is used: N = Пхоз х S / B х T where: N — number of livestock that can be grazed; S — total pasture area, ha; B — daily requirement of one animal in feed units; T — duration of the grazing period, days. The indicator is calculated 2 times a year, at the beginning and at the end of the grazing season.
