Definition
Number of forest fires, forest area burnt by fires.
Calculation method
1) Calculation of the forest fire area The area of a forest fire (S) is the area within the closed perimeter that has been burnt. It is measured by ground-based or aerial methods. The basic formula for calculating the area of a circular fire: S = π ⋅ R² where: R — distance from the centre (point of origin) to the edge of the fire. For fires of complex shape, the area is calculated as the sum of the areas of the geometric figures (sectors, ellipses, rectangles) into which the fire perimeter is divided. The type of fire (surface, crown, ground) is taken into account, and satellite data are used. 2) Estimation of the number of fires The number of forest fires is measured as the absolute number of fire outbreaks during the fire-hazard season. The relative indicator is the forest fire density (Nplot): Nplot = N / Sобщ where: N — number of forest fires, Sобщ — total area of the forest fund of the region. The indicator is calculated annually.
