Indicator metadata
- Definition
- This indicator reflects the number of new or enlarged nature reserve zones (strict nature reserves, national parks, nature sanctuaries) established by the state to protect unique ecosystems and rare species.
- Calculation method
- The annual growth dynamics of nature conservation areas are calculated using the formula: Total SPNAs = Number of new SPNAs + Number of expanded SPNAs. To assess the environmental contribution, not only the count matters but also the calculation of the total area of the added or expanded areas (in hectares or square kilometres). The indicator is calculated annually.
