Methodology

Indicator metadata

Definition
Land covered by forest — land occupied by forest stands of natural and artificial origin (forest plantations), as well as by shrubs. The main criterion for classifying stands and shrubs as land covered by forest is the stocking density (the degree of density of trees in a stand, characterizing the share of the occupied space that they use), which must be 0.4 or higher in young stands and shrub thickets, and 0.3 or higher in older stands.
Calculation method
The calculation of the area covered by forest is based on the forest cover formula: L = (Sles/Stot) × 100% where: L — forest cover (%), Sles — area covered by forest vegetation, Stot — total area of the territory. The indicator is calculated annually.
Institution responsible for calculation
Forestry Agency under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan
