Methodology

Indicator metadata

Definition
Precipitation (the total amount of water that has fallen on a given area of territory over a specific period of time) is water in liquid or solid form that has fallen from clouds or been deposited from the air onto the ground surface, various objects or plants. The indicator characterizes the state of the climate system, as well as the impacts of precipitation on changes in the volumes of river runoff and groundwater and on soils and biota, which makes it possible to assess the related climate changes.
Calculation method
The calculation of annual precipitation is the summation of daily measurement data over the year, expressed in millimetres of water layer. For engineering or hydrological purposes, design volumes are also determined, taking into account the area of the territory and recurrence coefficients. The indicator is measured daily and calculated annually.
Institution responsible for calculation
Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan; Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan
