Definition
Glacier area and mass balance is the relationship between the areas and masses of glacier accretion and glacier melt.
Calculation method
The calculation of the balance of the debris-free part of glaciers is based on an assessment of changes in their area, volume and mass. The fundamental indicator is the specific mass balance (Bn), which is expressed in metres of water equivalent (m w.e.). The mass balance of the debris-free part of a glacier is the difference between the mass that accumulates on it and the mass that is lost. Bn = C + A where: Bn is the total net mass balance; C is accumulation (accumulation of solid precipitation, avalanche snow and wind-drifted snow); A is ablation (mass loss through melting/runoff, evaporation/sublimation). If Bn > 0, the glacier gains mass; if Bn < 0, it degrades (loses mass). The indicator is calculated annually.
