Definition
A classic agroclimatic indicator reflecting the ratio between the amount of atmospheric precipitation and potential evaporation over the period with air temperatures above ten degrees Celsius. It is used for the comprehensive assessment of moisture availability for agricultural crops, the zoning of territories and the monitoring of drought intensity in the changing climate of Tajikistan.
Calculation method
The calculation follows the standard Selyaninov formula in accordance with the methodological guidelines for agrometeorological monitoring. It is calculated for the warm period of the year with stable mean daily air temperatures above ten degrees Celsius. Mathematically, the indicator is computed as follows: the total precipitation in millimetres for the period analysed is multiplied by ten, after which the resulting value is divided by the sum of mean daily air temperatures in degrees Celsius for the same time interval. Coefficient values from one to one and a half correspond to sufficient moisture availability, values below one to aridity, and a drop of the index below zero point five indicates severe aridity (severe drought). The indicator is calculated monthly during the growing season (from April to October), as well as cumulatively at the end of the agricultural season and the calendar year.
