Definition
An environmental and climate indicator reflecting the frequency and scale of direct losses of fauna and flora (death of populations, destruction of local ecosystems, nesting sites, spawning grounds and migration routes) recorded as a result of hazardous natural phenomena of a hydrometeorological nature.
Calculation method
The indicator is calculated by annually summing all officially documented cases of mass death or critical damage to biological resources caused by hydrometeorological emergencies. The change (increase) is assessed by comparing the total number of such cases in the current year with the arithmetic mean for the preceding five-year or ten-year period. From the total set of emergencies, only those incidents directly caused by droughts (leading to the drying up of water bodies and degradation of pastures) or by floods and mudflows (destroying riparian and floodplain ecosystems) are selected by expert judgement. The indicator is calculated annually
Institution responsible for calculation
Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defence under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan; Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan; National Biodiversity and Biosafety Centre under the Committee for Environmental Protection
