Definition
An environmental indicator reflecting the contraction of the geographical limits of the natural distribution of vulnerable, endemic or economically valuable species of flora and fauna as a result of climate stress (shifting of climate zones, aridification, changes in altitudinal zones or disappearance of the food base).
Calculation method
The calculation is carried out using comparative cartographic and mathematical modelling: 1. On the basis of long-term field surveys and satellite imagery, a current digital map of the actual habitat outline of the specific species is constructed. 2. This outline is compared with the historical (baseline) range map for past periods. 3. The magnitude of the reduction is calculated as the absolute difference obtained by subtracting the current actual habitat area from the historical baseline area. To express this indicator as a percentage, the resulting difference is divided by the historical baseline area and multiplied by one hundred per cent. In doing so, factor analysis methods are used to exclude anthropogenic causes (poaching, livestock grazing) and to isolate the influence of climate variables (isotherms, annual precipitation totals). The indicator is calculated periodically, once every 5-10 years
