Methodology

Indicator metadata

Definition
A meteorological parameter reflecting the distance travelled by air masses per unit of time in the surface layer of the atmosphere (at the standard height of 10 metres above ground level). It is used to monitor climate change, to assess wind energy potential and to forecast hazardous phenomena such as dust storms (garmsil) and squally winds that destroy infrastructure.
Calculation method
Measured continuously or discretely (8 times a day, every 3 hours) using wind sensors. On the basis of the primary measurements, the following are calculated: 1. The average wind speed for the day, month and year (as the arithmetic mean of the measured values). 2. The maximum wind speed (including gust speed) over a given period of time, to record extreme events. The indicator is recorded continuously in real time, while statistical aggregation (calculation of average and maximum values) is performed daily, monthly and annually.
Institution responsible for calculation
