Definition
A climate indicator reflecting the recurrence of calendar months in which the mean monthly air temperature was significantly above or substantially below the established long-term normal (climatic background value). It is used to assess the dynamics of increasing climate instability, heatwaves and extreme frosts.
Calculation method
The calculation is carried out in several steps for the selected time interval (for example, the last 10, 20 or 30 years): 1. On the basis of a long-term base period (for example, 1991–2020), standard extremity thresholds are calculated for each calendar month (usually anomalies of more than 1.5–2 standard deviations from the normal, or falling within the 10% most extreme historical values — the 10th and 90th percentiles). 2. The total number of months meeting the criteria “extremely hot” and “extremely cold” is counted in the period analysed. 3. To obtain the frequency as a percentage, the resulting number of extreme months is divided by the total number of months in the period analysed and multiplied by 100%. The indicator is calculated periodically
