Methodology

Definition
A climate parameter reflecting the difference between actual temperature values (mean monthly values, absolute maxima and minima) for a given month and the established long-term climate normal. It is used to identify and analyse extreme weather events such as heatwaves (prolonged heat) or cold waves (abnormal frosts). An extreme event is defined as a value falling outside the 5th or 95th percentile of the distribution, or exceeding a threshold of 3 standard deviations (σ) from the long-term mean. This parameter serves as an indicator of the increasing frequency of heatwaves and abnormally cold periods and of the general instability of the climate system.
Calculation method
Calculated as the difference between the actual temperature value for the reporting month and the long-term climate normal for the same month, computed for the 30-year base period of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The indicator is calculated monthly
