Methodology

Indicator metadata

Definition
A climate parameter reflecting the difference between the actual amount of precipitation that fell during the calendar year and the established long-term climate normal. A positive difference (well above the normal) may lead to floods, mudflows and landslides; a negative difference (well below the normal) characterizes drought and low-water conditions. The parameter falls into the category of extreme events when the anomaly exceeds the established threshold values (for example, falling outside the 10th or 90th percentile of the historical distribution).
Calculation method
Calculated as the difference between the precipitation total for the current year and the climate normal calculated for the 30-year baseline period of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The indicator is calculated annually (with interim analysis by season and month to identify extreme precipitation waves).
Institution responsible for calculation
Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan; Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan
